Beauty and the Beast (Read-Aloud Board Book) (Board book) - As a mother of a 3 1/2 year old little girl, I’m happy to have the excuse to visit many of my favorite Disney stories under the guise of sharing them with my daughter! I particulary love Beauty and the Beast because of it’s focus on internal goodness vs. external beauty. This board book tells the story in an abreviated fashion without losing the mains elements of the moral. Perfect for reading to a toddler with a very short attention span! My reason for giving it 4 vs. 5 stars was that one or two of the scenes depicted were in dark colors with a very subdued background…not very eye catching or interesting to a toddler. My little girl always seems to lose interest during these pages and I have to read them quickly to get to the next brightly colored and more “interesting” pages. Other than that we love the story and find this is a perfect version for the age market.

Hand That Rocks the Cradle: 400 Classic Books for Children (Perfect Paperback) - Being a serious bibliophile, I love this gem of a book, and think any parent new or old, who knows the value of good literature in a child’s life, will find great value in this book. The book symbols on page 10 show what to look for with each review, based on the time the story takes place, geographic setting of the story and publication date of the book. As well as 1,2,3 reading level ratings, for language and plot ease, more complex plots and reading levels ages 10 and up and lastly advanced language plots for ages 13 and up. This is a general rule which will vary on your child’s maturity level or if they are gifted. Appreciated the concise description of each book. The author is also honest enough to note on page 10 that his family is conservative and that many books didn’t make it to the list. This was my only disappointment since we have a home library of hundreds and hundreds of books of all genre, and age levels. As an example I was surprised that the Dr. Seuss/Theodor (“Ted”) Seuss Geisel books and the Madeline books by Ludwig Bemelmans were not included. And Babar books by Jean de Brunhoff. I note this because I and then my son and now my grandchildren all relish each of these authors who in our family are amongst the classic. And was surprised that under Mark Twain and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and also Tom Sawyer that a slight warning of a certain word pertaining to blacks wasn’t noted. But because I am a bibliophile and want to encourage parents and others to buy books as gift for children and have a serious book budget, I am recommending this book. — by MotherLodeBeth “MotherLodeBeth”

My brother and sisters and I added books that we read ourselves. My family is conservative; many books didn’t make it onto this list. We prefer older books, but we enjoy some newer books, too. Almost every book listed here is fiction. I have summarized the plot for each book. I hope I didn t give away too much! Book descriptions include time the story takes place, geographic setting of the story, and the publication date of the book. Books are divided into three reading levels: (1) Language and plot are easy all ages, (2) Language is more difficult or plot more complex ages 10 and up, and (3) Language is advanced or plot more mature ages 13 and up. Reading levels help many parents. My mother didn’t stick to these reading levels; I’ll forgive you if you ignore them. This completely revised and expanded edition of Hand That Rocks the Cradle adds over 250 new reviews to your old favorites.

There is a nice balance of well-known classics, such as “The Cratchits’ Christmas Dinner” from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, with lesser-known tales, such as William Dean Howells’s 1892 “Christmas Every Day.” Other authors include Fiona Waters, Vivian French, and Saviour Pirotta. Whybrow provides a foreword and a cheerful introduction to each selection. The Foot Book (Hardcover) – This is not as wildly imaginative as some other Seuss works, but it IS an excellent book for the beginning reader! It has only 47 words in its 27 pages and includes important vocabulary builders for toddlers and above. Simple adjectives, prepositions, and pronouns predominate. The repetition and presenting of word groups make this an excellent tool for reading. Since it won’t help reading if it’s not read, the book contains the fabulous characters and silly situations for which Seuss is known. Children’s Classics to Read Aloud (Classic Collections) (Paperback) – Kindergarten-Grade 8– A compilation of 20 selections from classic children’s books. Only Western culture is represented: there are 12 British stories, 6 American, and 2 Scandinavian. Included are “The Elephant’s Child,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “Under the Hill” from The Hobbit , “Wilbur’s Escape” from Charlotte’s Web , “The Ransom of Red Chief” and “Horror in the Pit” from The Pit and the Pendulum . Blishen provides approximate reading times but gives no age recommendations. Since some of the stories are quite sophisticated and employ very complex writing and elevated vocabulary, adults without a knowledge of children’s literature will need to read the book first to determine whether a story is appropriate. Children may demand to hear the books in their entirety, but two are out of print. Brief notes about the authors and stories introduce each work and a word guide that defines many of the British, archaic, and/or difficult words is appended. However, fewer than half include pronunciation and several, such as “propitiatory” and “recusant,” need that, too. Each story is decorated with two black silhouette drawings and a single color plate (usually placed several pages away from the appropriate text and often divulging an essential element of the plot). The large print and wide margins are good for the visually impaired. This kind of anthology may be useful in communities in which parents and teachers demand their read-alouds preselected and short, or it may be useful in exposing families and classrooms to classic literature that they might not otherwise hear, but librarians may want to steer patrons to the complete works instead. –Cynthia K. For the 2-4 year olds it gives them a look into what getting ready for school will be like. There are infants depicted, too, which helps them relate. A Child’s Garden of Verses (Wordsworth Children’s Classics) (Paperback) – First published in 1885, Stevenson’s marvellous collection of children’s poetry has never gone out of print, and remains near the top of numerous “best book’s for childen” lists. For example, Maurice Sendak, when asked to list books that he thought every child should have the opportunity to read, named this collection first. Harold Bloom, renowned literary critic (he has received more major awards from his peers than any other) and author of the thought-provoking and controversial “The Western Canon”, included ACGoV in the list he furnished in response to an interviewer’s request for a “Western Canon, Jr”. Among the homeschooling set, everyone from “Unschoolers” to “Classical Christian Educators” recommend it.(It”s on the Classical Christian Support Loop’s “1000 Good Books List”). The Chronical Books edition, containing all 64 of the poems that appeared in the original 1885 edition, is lavishly illustrated with more than a hundred pictures, many of them full page, by several of the most distinguished children’s book illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th century. The book is well laid out, with a pleasing juxtaposition of art and text, and printed on high-quality paper. It was named one of the “Top Ten Picturebooks of the Year” by Redbook, was an American Bookseller “Pick of the Lists” in 1989, and was given a starred review in Booklist. Stevenson perfectly captures the child’s world of sunshine, stars, dreams, toy boats, swings, apple tarts, fairies, flowers, and far-away places in simple, evocative language which remains just as accessable for today’s children as it was for their grandparents. And I can think of only one poem that might offend modern “Politically Correct” sensibilities: “Foreign Children”, wherein the speaker imagines asking various nationalities’ children “O! don’t you wish that you were me!” I guess the historical and socio-cultural context of this poem could be discussed with your child if you were so inclined. In short, this venerated work, and especially this glorious Chronical Books edition of it, belongs in every child’s library.
