Nothing But The Best (The Frank Sinatra Collection) - I’ll be honest. When I first heard about this cd through The Sinatra Family Forums back in February, I was ready to tear it to shreds. I thought to myself, “Frank’s gone 10 years now, and they’re marking the event with yet another compilation with same songs repackaged for the umpteenth time?” Even when it was announced that the songs were to be digitally remastered and a never before released bonus track was to be included, my anger and resentment towards this compilation still stuck. However, as the release date grew nearer and I got word from several people who were able to hear it before it officially hit the market told me it was totally worth it, I slowly warmed up to it and by last week was all set on buying it. When I received the cd this afternoon, I was extremely excited, even though I thought myself, “I heard these songs thousands of time before.” The first thing that struck me was how beautiful the packaging was: the cd comes in a cardboard case with one of the best pictures of Frank ever taken. The cd’s booklet is made from a elegant, smooth velvet like material and the liner notes by Charles Pignone as well as the various rare photos of Frank at work are excellent. Honestly, the packaging alone is enough to grab your attention.

But enough about the artwork. What about the music? As stated already, my biggest concern with this collection was that I heard all these songs before. I had already received the mammoth “Complete Reprise Studio Recordings” boxed set, which had all these songs (except one) as well as over 400 additional tracks, all of which featured more than satisfactory sound quality. Still, undaunted, I popped the cd onto my Ipod and went for a listen. Needless to say, I was blown away. The sound quality is INCREDIBLE. To hear the opening notes of “Come Fly With Me” bristle with sharpness and clarity is in itself a major thrill, and to hear Frank’s voice with such depth and range only adds to the fun. Seriously, there were parts of certain songs I never noticed before. Listen to how beautiful the harp sounds on “Bewitched” (remastered from the original 35MM tapes) or how sharp and clear Count Basie’s classic piano ticklings on the intro to “The Best Is Yet To Come” sound, or how fresh and powerful the horns on “New York, New York” blaze through the speakers. Sonically, the album is as close to flawless as humanly possible. Furthermore, knowing that many fans would be concerned with the whole “I’ve heard these songs before” stigma, the producers included several little bonuses on certain songs to surprise faithful listeners:

The tag on “Come Fly With Me” has been changed from “And don’t tell your momma” to another line from an alternate take, “Pack a small bag.” Though sources say otherwise , “The Best Is Yet To Come” seems to be a different mix (possibly spliced together from another take). Listen to how Frank phrases “Come the day you’re mine” on the bridge, it’s different from previous releases. “Strangers In The Night” is extended, with a few more “Do be do be do’s.”

But the real surprise, however, is the never before released track. “Body And Soul,” an old standad Frank first recored for Columbia in 1947, dates back to the “L.A. Is My Lady” sessions in 1984 with Quincy Jones. For whatever reason, Frank was dissatisfied with the initial take on the song, and left it off the album. 24 years later, however, Frank Sinatra Jr. dusted off Frank’s vocal track, removed Jones’ arrangement, and instead recorded a new orchestral backing that fits the song beautifully. Listening to this new majestic chart for the song, you’d never guess it was initially planned for the overly produced “L.A. Is My Lady” (a potential masterpiece marred by too many slick, 1980s’ style production values). It sounds like it was supposed to be on “Sinatra & Strings.” And if the orchestration isn’t enough, what about The Man himself? Here’s Frank, in the autumn of his years, still better than anyone around, punching out a timeless stanard with the same passion and fury that permeated through his most beloved recordings. It is a truly tour de force performance that was worth the wait. For all the pros for “Nothing But The Best,” there are, however a few cons. My main gripe, and it might be asking for a bit too much, is that it could’ve been two discs. There are a lot of Frank’s best recordings from the Reprise era missing, such as “In The Still Of The Night,” “The Coffee Song,” “You’re Nobody ‘Till Somebody Loes You,” “Come Rain Or Come Shine,” (or anything from “Sinatra & Strings,” which is undeservedly snubbed), “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Ol’ Man River,” (arguably his best recording ever), “I Have Dreamed,” “Soliloquy,” “All Or Nothing At All,” (either the 1961 ballad rendition or the thrilling 1966 swing version would have sufficed) and many others could’ve been included, to give the cd a bit more diversity instead of the typical hits. Also, while they were arguably done better in their initial Capitol incarnations, his redoings of “I Get A Kick Out Of You,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “All The Way,” “In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning,” “How Little We Know,” and others are still excellent renditions and are worth including. But in the end, this nitpicking adds little. The fact of the matter “Nothing But The Best” is still an excellent compilation with unbeatable sound with 22 songs ung by the greatest singer popular music has ever heard. — by Anthony Nasti “Tony”

WWE The Music – A New Day, Volume 10

WWE The Music – A New Day, Volume 10 (Amazon MP3 Exclusive) - Great set of tunes overall! I know I’ve been looking everywhere for a lot of these songs long before this compilation came out, and I know that I’m probably not alone. There are a couple of tracks here that make downloading this comp worth it (not to mention the price), and there are plenty of others that will have you singing right along in the gym/car/house/etc. I’m glad Jim Johnston expanded his horizons once again and got some real bands to help him make some good themes even better. Johnston’s always been a Zen master of producing memorable entrance music for the most popular WWE stars, and he hit the mark again with this one. (He’s done this before, of course, with “Forceable Entry” and “Wreckless Intent”, and generally, it hasn’t disappointed yet.) Many of the themes have a similarity to them as far as song structure, but the bands’ contributions are what make each track unique. (Besides, on TV you’re only going to hear the first minute or so of the songs anyway.) Story of the Year’s take on Christian’s theme is just the makeover that song needed, and is one of the best. Mutiny Within destroys Evan Bourne’s theme as well, and just from the first few notes my adrenaline started flowing. It’s an old-school-style heavy metal classic, complete with a blazing guitar solo in the middle. I’ve always liked Sheamus’ theme; no matter what people may think about the wrestler, you have to admit the Celtic flavor spicing up the hard rock matches his persona perfectly. “Return the Hitman” and “Crank the Walls Down” are hidden gems, with Maylene and the Sons of Disaster adding some extra oomph to a grinding mash-up of Chris Jericho’s and Big Show’s themes. Of course, as with every WWE Music compilation, not every track is a winner. “Radio” is pretty forgettable (just like the Zack Ryder himself), and the Diva tracks are just as much candy as the divas they represent. If you like sugary dance grooves, they’re right up your alley. And I’d have gladly traded Primo’s reggaeton-ish theme for another; it sticks out like an infected appendage on a comp full of driving hard rock tunes. WWE and Jim Johnston seem to really be stepping it up with their music production. Overall, this is a great compilation that showcases not only some of the WWE’s bright new talent, but introduces the listener to some cool new bands in the process. It’s one of the best collections overall that WWE has put out. The only thing that would’ve really put this collection over the top is if they had included the new theme songs from RAW (Nickelback’s “Burn It to the Ground”), Smackdown (Divide the Day’s “Let It Roll”), and WWE Superstars (Adelitas Way’s “Invincible”), but they can all easily be found elsewhere on Amazon. Definitely worth picking up if you’re a WWE fan or just looking for some new bands, especially at less than five bucks. — by C. W. Fitch

As you probably know the London Philharmonic is one of the world’s outstanding orchestras, and the collection is pretty much every piece you would expect to be included, and then some. It reminded me of the proms concert I went to years ago, it has that same high energy music that really rouses and gets the crowd going. You probably remember O Fortuna from Orff, from the Omen movies, and all the majors are are covered Bach, Beethoven even Handel’s Messiah. Interspersed with this are pieces like the Gymnopedies, Peer Gynt, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik from Mozart, and one of my new favorites, the impeccably beautiful movement of Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman, so a good variety of music to please every palate, from slow to meditative, to the virtuoso speed of Rondo Alla Turca. Buffet Hotel by Jimmy Buffett – The best piece of advice I can give is to put this album on and listen to it with you headphones on – forget the phone, emails, and real life for an hour or so and just let inner child parrothead come out and play on the musical trip Jimmy Buffett is serving. It’s a good trip and the weather, water, and music is mighty fine here, so jump on in and enjoy the escape!!! With all the trouble in the world nowadays, it’s nice to have the comfort of something uplifting and entertaining to help take your over-stressed mind on a much needed escape for a little while and Jimmy Buffett delivers with his newest album. Buffett Hotel (named after a real place Jimmy discovered while on an African trip) is really a true musical Buffet for fans of the singer who presents here a studio album full of the kind of smart, sassy, well-written and performed tunes about life, escapism, and coping that make him a such a beloved performer to a legion of parrotheads everywhere! Some hardcore JB Phans may comment on some little things like lightweight subjects, political commentary, or even Jimmy trying to rap, but the lyrics are always well crafted as Buffett is such a talented craftsman with words and this album does not disappoint when it comes to sharp, witty writing. Jimmy wrote most all the songs, with help on some from the talented Will Kimbrough and recent CMA Musician of the Year award winner, Mac Macanally, a Coral Reefer band-mate. The couple of tunes from others include fit well into the feel of the album and have the spirit of tunes one expects from Buffett. The album is a nice mix of moody, mellow tunes and funky, toe-tapping tunes with moving rythms that will have you tapping your toes and wiggling your body to the beats. The musical production is really good and the album is a joy to listen to with headphones as they really had a lot of fun creating treats for the ears with the mixing of the album. There are synth sounds straight out of 60′s surf tunes, bass beats that felt like a Huey chopper blades were beating in your head, and the stereo mix was a treat for the ears that brought back a simpler time long ago when people who created albums loved to play with listeners sensation of hearing with audio tricks and treats. His band proves itself capable of just about any type of music while on tour every year, and they do it all well. But throw them in the studio and get ready for them to blow you away as they crank out simply great performances of so many different styles and types of music that you understand exactly why Jimmy has kept so many of them with him for so many years. You’d expect the island music and it’s there and good, but this album gives the band and Jimmy a further chance to showcase impressive skills playing rowdy ripping rock, blues, jazz, country, psychedelic surf and more! I had already heard a few of the tunes live from radio broadcasts of concerts this summer but really enjoyed them a LOT more in this studio album format where the audio production could really shine. Rated R (Explicit) by Rihanna – I’m usually not a big Rihanna fan,and quite frankly she’s been more popular with 12 y.o. then the college crowd. But she keeps making the hits and like Miley Cyrus, has proven to be quite sustainable and sometimes enjoyable. I liked SOS when it came out when i was in high school, and i thought umbrella and don’t stop the music were somewhat enjoyable tracks. I was awaiting this album, because let’s face it. Behind Britney and Beyonce,she’s probably the highest ranking pop star of the past few years. I knew that she would probably do the Madonna and Britney route and try to do a S&M,dark theme type album and boy was i right. I actually really enjoyed this cd all the way through. I thought that she’s improved as a singer and quite frankly just won me over as a fan. I thought Russian Roulette was a chilling ballad, love the vocal work.Wait your Turn was a bangin way to open up an album. Rock Star 101 was a awesome and enjoyable track as well. I was surprised at how catchy G4L was! I assumed it would just be filler, but towards the end of the album it got more enjoyable for me.Te Amo was a beautifully written track and wasn’t as cliche as i thought it was going to be. Hard the second single from the album,was my least favorite track but it was catchy and it could be a hit.This album def. won me over as a fan. It’s a shame it wont be as big as her last album,due to all the new releases coming out this week! This album is a most have! Battle Studies by John Mayer – Once again Mayer hits all octaves in a bluesy, jazzy, poppy kind of way! His unique voice and sophisticated guitar riffs with the nice drum beats make this CD another great piece to add to you collection. If you are a true Mayer fan, it is a no brainer. His music keeps you upbeat and happy. The lyrics can be a bit simplistic at times, yet at others deeper meanings can be found. While I like the reflection on “Crossroads” it just cannot seem to capture the essence of the original. Bottom line… you will not be disappointed in this new release. Southern Voice

Southern Voice (Tim McGraw) - Southern Voice has a decidedly mellow tone to it throughout most of its 12 tracks, the majority of which never really move past mid-tempo. This pattern is broken up only by the two songs chosen as lead singles: Business Doing Pleasure with You and Southern Voice. These songs were undoubtedly tapped by the label to market an album that, while it doesn’t quite reach the territory of “dark” (though the theme of Good Girls and parts of I’m Only Jesus certainly qualifies), contains a number of, in McGraw’s words, “flawed characters” that explore a sizable amount of pretty heavy territory and give the album a pretty dominant somber tone. That being said, the album is strongest when immersed this heavy subject matter and those songs seem to have an underlying power combined with an atmosphere of reverence and immediacy, due part to excellent production, but mainly because McGraw is the master of conveying emotion and these songs involve very emotional subject matter. On first listen, I felt the album was really good, but after a dozen listens, I’m of the opinion that Tim has crafted a masterpiece of a record. With Southern Voice, Tim McGraw as given us an album that is a mature masterpiece; these are songs by a mature artist in his prime who has no peer when it comes to conveying emotion and feeling through his music. Never have I listened to a collection of songs, album or otherwise, that have hit a nerve and given me the chills like the songs on Southern Voice have. These are songs about mature people, for mature people; a collection of statements by a husband, father and son about life and what it’s really like to live and grow for forty years.–by Will W.
