Clash of the Titans (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (2010) – “Release the Kraken!” Ah, it could only be Clash of the Titans, the 2010 remake that retains the instruction to unleash the great beastie from the sea. The 1981 original boasted Ray Harryhausen’s legendary stop-motion technique of animating various mythological creatures–it was his final feature project–and given the cornball approach of the movie in general, that was the main draw. The remake supplies new state-of-the-art special effects (released in 3-D) and a nicely muscular sense of momentum. Sam Worthington (the Avatar guy) plays Perseus, a demigod who doesn’t know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father. Perseus is selected to lead an expedition to find and slay the Medusa, lest Zeus’s evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes, in fine slinking mode) rain down misery upon a seaport–and you just know that means the Kraken is coming. Ye gods, it’s a mess, and we haven’t even mentioned the witches and the harpies and the giant scorpions. But if we did, it would be clear that Clash of the Titans is a perfectly dandy popcorn epic, unpretentious and punchy. Director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2) gets a fine rhythm going during Perseus’s trek, and you can even forgive the hokey shafts-of-light-through-clouds look of Olympus. Leterrier also had the good sense to import the marvelous Danish star Mads Mikkelsen to provide mentoring duties to Perseus; Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos fulfill the eye-candy roles. It’s up to individual viewers to choose which they prefer–Harryhausen’s magically hand-wrought creations (his Medusa sequence is an absolute killer) or the 21st century’s slick computer-generated variations. But nostalgia aside, it would be hard to deny that this is one case where the remake tops the original. — by Robert Horton

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2010) – Fans of Stieg Larsson’s Men Who Hate Women may have been concerned about how the Swedish author’s novel would translate to the screen, but they needn’t have worried. Significant changes to the source material have been made, but director Niels Arden Opley’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, as it’s now called, is mostly riveting. As the story begins, middle-aged investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) has just been convicted of a bogus charge of libel against a rich and corrupt corporate hotshot when he’s unexpectedly offered a most unusual gig. An aging captain of industry named Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) wants Blomkvist to figure out what happened to Vanger’s niece, who disappeared more than 40 years earlier; not only is the old man convinced that she was murdered, but he suspects that another member of his large and rather disagreeable family (which includes several former Nazis) is the culprit. Blomkvist takes the job, which includes spending at least six months on Vanger’s isolated island in the middle of winter. But what he doesn’t know is that he’s being spied on by twentysomething Lisbeth Salander (brilliantly played by Noomi Rapace in a career-making performance), the titular Girl and the possessor of remarkable skills as a sleuth and computer hacker. With her gothlike piercings and all-black clothes, Lisbeth is a vivid character, to say the least. While we don’t exactly know the details of her dark past, it’s obviously still with her; indeed, she’s just been assigned a new “guardian” (like a parole officer) to look after her finances and other matters. We also know that she is not someone to mess with; when the guardian turns out to be a thoroughly vile monster, Lisbeth gets back at him in one of the more satisfying revenge sequences in recent memory. That Lisbeth and Mikael should end up working together, and more, isn’t especially surprising. But the horrifying details and depths of depravity they uncover while working on the case (parallels to The Silence of the Lambs are facile but appropriate) definitely are, and Opley does a nice job of keeping it all straight. At more than two and a half hours, the film is long, with its share of grim, graphic, and scary moments, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a winner. –Sam Graham

Invictus (2009)

Invictus (2009) – After South Africa elected Nelson Mandela president, the racially divided country could’ve easily erupted into civil war. In Clint Eastwood’s determinedly populist, yet heartfelt look back at that time, the director examines one of the more ingenious steps Mandela (Morgan Freeman in a performance of sly charm) took to prevent that from happening. Knowing that his country was set to host the Rugby World Cup in 1995, Mandela believed the national team could provide an example of reconciliation in action. Led by François Pienaar (an unbelievably buff Matt Damon), the mostly white Springboks inspired devotion among Afrikaners and disgust among native Africans. Instead of changing their name or colors, Mandela encouraged them to win for the sake of their homeland. During the year leading up to the event, the team learns to work together as never before, just as Mandela’s newly integrated security detail, a combination of cops and activists, finds a way to bridge their ideological differences. By the time of the big day, the poorly ranked Springboks are well equipped to hold their own against New Zealand’s All Blacks (so named for their uniforms, not their racial composition). Drawing from John Carlin’s Playing the Enemy, Anthony Peckham’s script takes its title, Latin for “unconquerable,” from a British poem Mandela held close to his heart during the 27 years he spent in prison. If Damon’s accent is more convincing, Freeman serves as the film’s heart–and as a timely reminder that reconciliation is never easy, but that it will always trump revenge. — by Kathleen C. Fennessy

Edge of Darkness

Edge of Darkness – The good news is that Edge of Darkness (no relation to the fine 1943 war picture of that name) brings back Mel Gibson in front of the camera for the first time in nearly a decade. Although he’s grown creased and leathery and his thatch has thinned, the movie star who was Mad Max still has the charisma and gravitas to center a dodgy suspense tale and propel it to the finish line. Gibson plays veteran Boston police detective Tom Craven, who welcomes home daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) for a rare visit, then sees her shot down at his front door. Because the gunman shouted “Craven!” and because a cop makes enemies, Tom assumes Emma took a bullet meant for him, which adds considerably to his grief and pain. But as he looks into the life of a daughter he loved yet scarcely knew, he discovers she’d been preparing to turn whistleblower on her employer, a corporation doing unsavory clandestine things for the government. Craven starts having oblique chats with a philosophical Brit named Jedburgh (Ray Winstone), who keeps turning up unexpectedly–in Craven’s backyard at night, say–always giving the distinct impression that he could just as well kill a fellow instead of schmoozing. Their strange rapport, like Craven’s tendency to mutter ironical asides as if in ongoing conversation with the departed Emma, is more intriguing than the conspiracy involving corporate skullduggery and a rogue assassination bureau. The bar for that sort of thing was set in post-Watergate days by Alan J. Pakula’s The Parallax View, and we’re nowhere near its cinematic elegance or pervasive paranoia. Edge of Darkness, based on a British miniseries from 1985, was directed by Martin Campbell, who also handled the six-hour original (and more recently the successful James Bond reboot Casino Royale). Campbell does decent-enough work–the occasional bursts of “shocking action” do shock even as we know they’re coming–but rarely exceeds generic requirements. For killing comparison among contemporary suspense films, catch Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer, in which every frame unsettlingly conveys a world where disquiet is the natural order of things. — by Richard T. Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland (2010) - Tim Burton was born to bring Alice in Wonderland to the big screen. Ironically, his version of the Victorian text plays more like The Wizard of Oz than a Lewis Carroll adaptation. On the day of her engagement party, the 19-year-old Alice (a nicely understated Mia Wasikowska) is lead by a white-gloved rabbit to an alternate reality that looks strangely familiar–she’s been dreaming about it since she was 6 years old. Stranded in a hall of doors, she sips from a potion that makes her shrink and nibbles on a cake that makes her grow. Once she gets the balance right, she walks through the door that leads her to Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas), the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor), the Blue Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), and the Cheshire Cat (a delightful Stephen Fry), who inform her that only she can free them from the wrath of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter channeling Bette Davis) by slaying the Jabberwocky. To pull off the feat, she teams up with the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp in glam-rock garb), rebel bloodhound Bayard (Timothy Spall), and Red’s sweet sister, the White Queen (Anne Hathaway in goth-rock makeup). While Red welcomes Alice with open arms, she plans an execution for the hat-maker when he displeases her (“Off with his head!”). Drawing from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Burton creates a candy-colored action-adventure tale with a feminist twist. If it drags towards the end, his 3-D extravaganza still offers a trippy good time with a poignant aftertaste. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

It’s Complicated (2009)

It’s Complicated (2009) – It’s delightful to see Meryl Streep come into her own as a romantic comedian in her later career years–after all the accolades, the Oscars, the serious-as-marble dramatic roles. Streep is in fact a true cutup, as she has demonstrated in films like Mamma Mia and Julie & Julia–and she gets the guy. So if Nancy Meyers’s It’s Complicated is perhaps a bit facile in the plot department, it’s saved by a splendid romp of a performance by Streep (as Jane), along with her two leading men, Alec Baldwin (Jane’s ex-husband, Jake) and Steve Martin (her supposed boyfriend, Adam). Meyers, as she did in Something’s Gotta Give and Baby Boom, turns notions of over-the-hilldom–at least for women–on their ear. Streep’s Jane is a contented, affluent divorcée with excellent taste in furnishings, happily about to preside over an empty nest and feeling just fine about it. Who should bump into, and ruin, this perfect solitude but Jane’s ex, Jake, played to a pompous (and hilarious) fare-thee-well by Baldwin. “Turns out I’m a bit of a slut,” chirps the sexually awakened Jane. The beauty of It’s Complicated is that it really isn’t all that complicated–its chemistry depends on the wonderful actors (including the supporting cast of John Krasinski, Lake Bell, Mary Kay Place, and Rita Wilson) and the oft-forgotten reality that people over 25 can have great sex, and fall head over heels. — by A.T.
