To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini s immortal aria ‘Nessun Dorma’ and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley s interpretation of ‘Corpus Christi Carol.’ Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. ‘It turned out amazingly well, but I didn t want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music.’ In addition to the orchestral pieces, EMOTION & COMMOTION showcases a number of original compositions. For ‘Hammerhead,’ Beck fires the rocker s opening salvo through his wah-wah pedal before falling into a deep groove carved out by the rhythm section and horn arrangement. At the opposite end of the sonic spectrum, the airy arrangement that elevates ‘Never Alone’ provides a wide-angle soundscape for Beck s imagination to freely explore the high-flying melody. Before launching a world tour to support EMOTION & COMMOTION, Beck will unite with Eric Clapton in February for a series of exclusive shows in London, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. The guitarists both former members of the Yardbirds will play separately before taking the stage to perform together. After the shows with Clapton, Beck will play South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan before returning to America for the U.S. leg of the tour starting mid-April and including an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 1. For Beck, the new album and tour follows in the wake of a triumphant 2009 his most successful year ever. Plastic Beach by Gorillaz – Customer Review: Cartoon band Gorillaz’s new CD “Plastic Beach” features an armada of guests, including Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, De La Soul, Lou Reed, and Mick Jones & Paul Simonon from The Clash, to mention a few. However, they are well used and rarely overwhelm the songs they feature on. Unlike its Dangermouse-produced predecessor “Demon Days”, production this time is by Damon Albarn incorporating all his musical influences from projects as diverse as Amadou & Miriam to Blur and the results are simply staggering! “White flag” with Kano and Bashy, for example, features Middle Eastern strings sounds by The National Orchestra For Arabic Music (and anti-war, anti-crime lyrics), the groovy “Welcome to the plastic beach” (with Snoop Dogg), and the Dubby “Sweepstakes” (with Mos Def) both feature 9 piece brass Jazz group Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, while the twinkly “Glitter freeze” with Mark E Smith or “On melancholy hill” (with quivering organ and sixties-style harmonies) could have come off Blur’s “Think Tank”. Those seeking another “Feel good Inc” will have to make do with the dense future-funk of “Stylo” with Mos Def and an incredibly soulful Bobby Womack telling us “Love is electric” against a string back drop that sounds nicked from Michael Jackson’s “Who is it”. Womack appears again on “Cloud of unknowing”. Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys and De La Soul feature on “Superfast jellyfish”, the guitar-drenched ballad “empire ants” features Little Dragon, who also feature on the 13 minute epic “To binge”. The title track is a blistering Rocker with squealing guitars and the two Clash titans on it. A masterpiece! My Best Days by Danny Gokey

My Best Days by Danny Gokey - Question: Do you have to be from “The South” to be country? Also, does someone from the Midwest–Wisconsin, let’s say–have the right to sing in the country genre? My answers to both questions are, “no” and “yes”, respectively. Danny Gokey, who is a Wisconsin native, attempts to record a country music album, and actually succeeds. His singing is genuine, as well as the production, instrumentation, phrasing and styling, and does not sound insincere unlike someone who would be a “wannabe” country artist. The opening and title track is one of the best in the album, and is instantly melodic. A.I. judge/songstress Kara DioGuardi penned “I Believe”, which would make a good single. “Tiny Life”–which is in my opinion the best track and should be the second single–was penned by “What Hurts The Most” songwriter Jeffrey Steele, and has the same impact as that song. Valleys Of Neptune by Jimi Hendrix – This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 previously unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their groundbreaking 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features “Valleys Of Neptune,” one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix’s commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs “Red House,” “Fire,” and “Stone Free.” Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix’s inspired interpretations of “Bleeding Heart” (Elmore James) and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix’s albums throughout the guitarist’s lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE: Track by Track – All of the 12 recordings featured on the album have never before been released on a CD/LP. The songs document the pivotal time period after Electric Ladyland and before Electric Lady Studios and the recordings made there that would later take form as Cry of Love and First Rays. Valleys of Neptune documents both the final studio recordings Jimi made in 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience and the first efforts with new bassist Billy Cox. As a number of the song titles will be familiar to fans and buyers alike, the following details the key characteristics of each of the tracks on Valleys of Neptune.

“Stone Free”: The original 1966 recording by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience is best known as one of Jimi’s signature songs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) featured a new remake by the original group. Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox recorded this version in May 1969. It is a different recording entirely.

“Valleys of Neptune”: This track was recorded in September, 1969, and May, 1970. This full-band version has never been released. An extract of a demo Hendrix made of this song — featuring just Mitchell on drums and percussionist Juma Sultan — was part of the short-lived Reprise/Polydor album Lifelines, which was in the marketplace between 1990 to 1992.

“Bleeding Heart”: This cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James is different entirely from the versions featured on South Saturn Delta and (originally) on War Heroes. This recording has never been issued and features Jimi, Billy Cox, and drummer Rocky Isaac. It was recorded in April, 1969.

“Hear My Train A Comin’”: This electric, full-band version is different from the famous 12-string acoustic version that was featured in the 1973 documentary Jimi Hendrix and subsequently on the album Jimi Hendrix: Blues.

“Mr. Bad Luck”: Like “Valleys of Neptune”, a different version of this song was part of Lifelines in (1990). Jimi would later develop this song as “Look Over Yonder,” issued as part of South Saturn Delta.

“Sunshine of Your Love”: A stage favorite for the group during the 1969 period which has never been released.

“Lover Man”: Jimi recorded many different arrangements of this song, including the versions on both the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) and South Saturn Delta. This is an entirely different recording made in February, 1969.

“Ships Passing Through the Night”: A never-before-released track taken from the last recording session by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4/14/69.

“Fire/Red House”: Both of these songs by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience were recorded at the same February, 1969, session. They feature the expanded stage arrangements Jimi had developed and are not alternate takes of the original 1967 recordings.

“Lullaby for the Summer/Crying Blue Rain”: These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released.

American VI: Ain’t No Grave by Johnny Cash – “American VI: Ain’t no grave” is the final in the Rick Rubin produced “American” series of CDs by Johnny Cash. Like its predecessors, it comprises pared-back covers, as well as (in this case), an original (and purpotedly final) composition by Cash. “I Corinthians 15:55″ is the lone original with lyrics looking at his mortality and the hope of seeing his Redeemer. Mortality, love, redemption, and spirituality colour the 10 songs on this beautiful CD, and I must say, for what supposedly comprises his last recordings, he sounds a lot stronger than he did on songs like “If you could read my mind” (from “American V”), or “Bridge over troubled water” (“American IV), where he was slightly reedy. “Redemption day” (a Sheryl Crow composition) is a beautiful acoustic ballad that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Western movie, with Cash singing about the “train that’s heading straight to heaven’s gate”, while “For the good times” (a Kris Kristofferson composition) is a heartbreaking farewell to his lover as they part and he reminisces the good times they shared. “Can’t help but wonder where I’m bound” touches on his journey on earth and his curiousity over his final destination. The solemn “Last night I had the strangest dream” finds him dreaming of a world with no more war, against a richer musical backdrop than the other songs. Highlight, in my opinion” is “Ain’t no grave”, his fearless and defiant proclamation that no grave can hold his body down when he hears the trumpet sound, and his looking forward to meeting Jesus, his mother and father. Chiming bell sounds, Soft guitars and banjo set to shuffling shackled-footstep sounds which provide the gentle beat to this stirring song. As with the previous discs in the series, Cash inhabits and makes each song his own. It is obvious he knew his sojourn here was done and the songs reflect his strong belief of a life well lived and being reunited with loved ones on the other side of eternity. His guitar playing and vocals are beautiful and soothing. I didn’t know that Jeff Bridges could sing country. There is no real country singer named Bad Blake, but I can believe that Jeff Bridges is a country singing star after listening to this song. This is a fun song. Another big shock is Colin Farrell. He sings the song “Gone Gone Gone” in his role as Tommy Sweet. This is an upbeat song that knocks my socks off. Jeff and Colin duet on the song “Fallin and Flyin”. This is one of the highlights on the song. Lucinda Williams lends her talents with her song “Joy”. She can play the guitar like few people can. There are two versions of the track “Somebody Else”. I like the instrumental guitar playing by Stephen Bruton, and I love the version with vocals by Jeff Bridges. “I Let The Freight Train Carry Me On” is a light happy tune that puts me in a good mood.
