The Sea by Corinne Bailey Rae – UK songstress Corinne Bailey Rae follows up her multi-million selling eponymous debut with an effortlessly sounding yet stunning follow-up “The Sea”, betraying absolutely no signs of pressure she may have been under to deliver a worthy follow-up. Since the success of her debut, she tragically lost her husband, and while lyrically, she sometimes touches on that sadness (“Are You Here” or the lilting title track), the album is in no way dreary or overtly melancholic. The Element of Freedom by Alicia Keys – I was a bit apprehensive with the new album when I heard and saw the video for the first single “Doesn’t Mean Anything”. It just seemed like it went on and on, and it got boring afterwhile. Then my interest was peaked a bit when the second single “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart” was released; I didn’t care for the video all too much but it was different than her other singles. So when the day came that it finally came out, I figure why not get it (or someone get it for me). Alicia Keys has never let me down with previous albums, despite the inconsistencies on each album. Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser - Straight No Chaser’s latest holiday album is full of brand new recordings by this group and it’s all about Christmas. Indeed, this is going to be a terrific stocking stuffer this year! Everything about the track set is brand new except that we get the album version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” instead of a live recording of “The 12 Days of Christmas” that was on their album entitled “Holiday Spirits.” Moreover, Straight No Chaser sound wonderful; I could listen to this CD every day and never tire of it! They are exceptionally gifted performers. The quality of the sound is very good and the artwork is excellent, too. Continue reading Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser

Glee: The Music, Volume 2 (SOUNDTRACK) – This new “Volume 2″ album of the music from Glee contains some mighty special music. These fine artists harmonize and sing lyrics to perfection–and beyond! Sure, there’s one or two tracks here that may be not quite as good as others; but the rest of what we get is so remarkably good that I’ll be holding onto this CD for quite some while to come! The quality of the sound is good and I like the artwork; we also get credits in the liner notes that list who sings which number. Continue reading Glee: The Music, Volume 2 (SOUNDTRACK)

Twelve Nights in Hollywood by Ella Fitzgerald (BOX SET) (LIVE) (ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED) – These intimate dates come from a Los Angeles club called the Crescendo in 1961 and 1962, two of Ella’s peak years. Only one of the pristine tracks has ever been released. Why did Verve take nearly half a century to put out this treasure? It’s a case of more profitable material, a wealth of studio recordings, crowding out excellent performances that could have been a hit originally. Alas, producer Norman Granz gave them short shrift: a single poorly-selected and poorly-mastered album that flopped commercially. The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga (Deluxe Edition) (EXTRA TRACKS) – Has an album title ever been so self-prophetic? In its first year, this electropop opus rocketed Lady Gaga from unknown New York lounge singer to the world’s biggest pop star this side of Britney Spears. The Fame’s brand of pop is shamelessly decadent: 11 of its 13 songs are about money, celebrity, sex, clubbing, or a sticky combination of all four. It’s insipid subject matter, unless you consider Gaga as less of a silly, manufactured blonde than an ingenious artist playing the part of a glitzy pop star.
